Missed Label Detector

A professional label printing operation was suffering from missed labels being printed.  This caused unacceptable quality problems further down the manufacturing line.  The printer used an ink ribbon to give a high quality printed label.  This was useful because when a label was missed it left an extended black space on the ribbon ....

JCS developed a reflective detector that mounted on the ribbon assembly and monitored the frequency of the ink images occurring on the ribbon when the ink was transferred from the ribbon to the label.

The detector summed the results from three independent optical heads in case one head happened to reflect off of the dark space between letters.   The final mechanical assembly looked like ….

The electronics used were a variant of the JT186, programmed to auto detect any label speed changes but not any label misses.
